In the wake of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the Czech Republic recently, one cardinal said the historic trip has placed the Church at the center of
the country’s social life and has profoundly revitalized Catholics in a
country that is usually seen as “atheist and secularized.”
The Jesuit Father Jose Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory,
explained that the Vatican is involved in astrobiology because, although it
is "an emerging field and still a developing subject, the question of
life’s origin and of whether life exists elsewhere in the universe are
very interesting and deserve serious consideration.
